Post-Fire Recovery

IMG_5233.JPG, originally uploaded by inyopfc.

A tiny swale in the San Bernardino mountains, a year and a half after a major fire. In this area, however, most of the mature pines were spared. There are as many flowers under the trees as I've ever seen, and lots of water, perhaps because less trees are struggling for groundwater (or perhaps it was just a good snowpack). We found water in this little gully in early June, and lots of flowers.

This is one of the prettiest photos I've ever seen.
Must be near Hohn's sweet home...

it is... it is near the icy hill we all went sledding on.

In some ways the fire was really sad because it killed trees I've run around under since i was just a little kid.

but in a lot of places it was a good thing,
cleaning out the forest and letting new plants grow.

unfortunately the forest service already planted a bunch of pine trees in areas that already have too many trees, which will just make it burn too hot next time.
