So it's official. El Nino is back.
Two years ago, we had a very wet year, the wettest in over 100 years. Flooding was not as great as it could have been, beacuse the rain was spread out over a long period of time. More problems came from mudslides caused by soil saturation. Last year was a La Nina year - which would normally mean dry conditions. However, due to a relatively wet fall and spring, it was a near average year despite the La Nina. Now that El Nino is back, does it mean that the wet pattern will continue and it will be a year like 2004-2005? Or will other factors lead to an average or even below average rainfall year? It's hard to say... I'd guess it will probably be wetter than average, but beyond that, we will just have to wait and see!
One other upside to El Nino is a decrease in Atlantic hurricanes... thsi year has been unusually quiet in the Atlantic so far and hopefully next year will be, too
